Sound
The sound used throughout this opening sequence creates tension and makes the opening more effective because the music sounds like its building up to something really explosive and shocking. This connotes that the film with be very interesting in the way that it will keep the audience and viewers gripped and on the edge of their seats. This also connotes that this film will have lots of scenes that build up to an explosion of action. The sound is very consist and and has continuity as it doesn't change throughout the opening sequence. this fits in with Todorov's theory on equilibrium as the opening connotes that the film with start of normally and calm and then there will be a problem that comes up that will ruin the equilibrium and will cause a huge explosion of drama to keep the audience gripped.
Narrative to set the scene
There isn't too much narrative during this opening however it suggests this film will include a lot of dark things that will later on be shown in more detail. Also in one of the shots it denotes a few words being crossed out one of them words being 'transexual' this connotes that maybe this film is about categories and how they are wrong. This also connotes that maybe there is someone in the film that looks at all of these categories in great detail throughout the film. This fits in with Barthes' Theory of enigma code as these aspects of the opening sequence fills the audiences heads with unanswered questions that they will want answered so will carry on watching. This includes questions like; What is this character doing? Who is he? Is he one of the main characters? if so why is he not introduced properly.
Introduction to the main character
Throughout this opening sequence there isn't a proper introduction to a character. The most you see is the hands of the character making some sort of book. This creates a lot os unanswered questions in the viewers head, which fits in with Barthes' theory on the enigma code as it leaves the viewers wanting to know who this person is and whether he is important in the film or if he is just in the opening sequence. This may also fit in with Vladmir Propp's theory on characters as this person introduced may infect be a villain in the story as during the opening sequence it denotes him doing research and looking at articles and book which may connote that this character is trying to find an important piece of information.
Mise-en-scene to set the scene
Throughout this opening sequence the lighting is quite dim and dull which connotes that this fill may contain death or serious issues. This fits in with Todorov's theory of equilibrium as the dullness of the lighting connotes that something serious may happen that destroys the equilibrium. This is connoted as the dullness connotes death or a serious matter that will arise at some point of the film.
Location
During the opening of this film it seems as though that it is set in an office of some kind which connotes that whoever is being shown in this opening may be important or may have an important occupation. This also connotes that this character may have a busy life which may stop him from being able to enjoy a social life. he may not even be able to see his family or friends. This may also connote that he is a very complex and peculiar character.
Opening credits
In the opening credit they show the names involved so that the audience can make link to genres and different writers as they may like other films the writers have produced. The first thing that came up in the credit was that is was from Arnold Kopelson productions. This helps the viewers make a link to who its by and what other films that use this. The next thing that came up was that it was David Fincher's film. This helps the viewers try and figure out what genre this film is as David Fincher may have made a film that they have also seen. The actors Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman, Gwyneth Paltrow, Richard Roundtree, R.LeeErmey etc up next which tells the viewers who's in it. This will automatically make the viewers more interested as there may be certain actors that attract them to the film as actors like Brad Pitt are quite popular and is liked by most genders.
