Film poster analysis

Media Studies- Film Poster Analysis
The colours used in this film poster are quite bright and eye catching; this poster uses red and orange. These colours add drama and connote danger which would attract people that like action films as these are the colours that would most likely catch your eye most. The target audience for this film would also be men that enjoy watching a bit of action/fighting. This poster will definitely catch their attention as the colours connote danger and action. The colour red usually connotes danger and wounds. The colour orange resembles the colour of sparks and fires so this connotes that at some point in this film there is some kind of danger that involves electronics and smoke.

The images used in this film poster are set out quite different to how they usually are in films. The film title ‘unstoppable’ is presented in capitals which shows that the title may give a clue to what the film is about. The title is also in the shape of a train which connotes that maybe this film is about a train that is unstoppable which could create some kind of danger/climax. This fits in with todorov’s theory about how narratives were cyclical. This poster fits in with this because this poster shows a train with the title ‘unstoppable’ which connotes that the film with start off calm with an equilibrium, then will start to build up to a disruption of the equilibrium, then there will be a recognition of the disruption, an attempt to repair and then a new equilibrium. This is represented in the film poster because it suggest that there will be some kind of train ride which will lead to some sort of problem with the train or the people on it which will lead to people finding out about it and then there will be an attempt to repair or find a solution to this problem with the train and then this solution will lead to the problem with the train being solved and a new equilibrium being created.

The narrative used in this poster creates clues, in the unstoppable poster it denotes the title font with a lot of lines on them that suggest speed. The title is in the shape of a train, the title is ‘unstoppable’. This all connotes that there is a train that is going really fast that is unstoppable which also connotes that maybe there will be some kind of crash or problem with the train. From this poster I can tell that this film is going to be action and will keep you on the edge of your seat. This film will target most people because everyone likes a film that keeps them gripped and this poster makes this film seem like that type of film. The main actors names are in capital which shows they are important characters and will most probably be the main focus of the film. The face expression on the two men’s faces on this poster are quite serious which connotes that something serious will happen which will create a lot of problems. This also connotes that this problem will have to be solved by these two main characters as they look quite serious. In this poster the faces of the main characters are chopped up and collaged with other parts of the film. The other pictures denote one of the main characters jumping and the other picture shows the other main character struggling to stay on the train. It denotes him hanging on the train.  This connotes that there will be a lot of drama and trouble with these characters in this film.
